When you think of Marvel Comics, you probably think of superheroes like Spiderman, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. However, Marvel Comics is much more than that. The Marvel Comics story goes back to 1939, when it was known as Timeless Comics. It remained that name until the 1950’s when it became Atlas Comics. In 1961, Atlas Comic became Marvel Comics, and introduced many new characters that we are familiar with.
Under the direction of Stan Lee, new comic book heroes, villains and stories began to be published In Marvel Comics. The story of Peter Parker, who was bitten by a radioactive spider and became Spiderman, was published. The story of Tony Stark, who became Iron Man, was born. And in November 1961, Marvel introduced the first Superhero team – The Fantastic Four. To provide competition to the superheroes a new group of supervillains began to appear. Villains such as Doctor Doom, Green Goblin, Magneto and Doctor Octopus, started to appear in print and battle the heroes in the Marvel Universe.
Marvel Comics and the Marvel Universe have been with us for many years. With a constantly changing roster of characters responding to world events, we expect Marvel Comics to be with us for many more years.
